What Is Perimenopause?

Most of us are familiar with menopause. But do you know that there are several stages of menopause? You might have heard of perimenopause. What is perimenopause? What are the symptoms of perimenopause?

Perimenopause means the menopause transition years, the years both before and after the last period ever, when the majority of women find that they undergo at least some symptoms of hormonal change and fluctuation, such as hot flashes, mood changes, insomnia, fatigue, memory problems, etc.

During perimenopause, the production of most of the reproductive hormones, including the estrogens, progesterone and testosterone, diminishes and becomes more irregular, often with wide and unpredictable fluctuations in levels. During this period, fertility diminishes.

Symptoms of perimenopause can begin as early as age 35, although most women become aware of them about 10 years later than this. Perimenopause can last for a few years, or for ten years or even longer. In this respect it resembles puberty, a similar process which surrounds menarche. In fact menopause can usefully be compared to “puberty in reverse”, and the psychological challenges and adjustments which take place over this time span can be compared to adolescence.

The actual duration and severity of perimenopause in any individual woman cannot be predicted in advance or during the process. Not every woman experiences symptoms during perimenopause. Approximately one third of all women get no noticeable symptoms other than that their periods become erratic and then stop. Another one third of women have moderate symptoms. The remaining one third of women have very strong symptoms which tend to have a longer duration. The tendency to have a very strong perimenopause may be inherited in some cases.

Here are some of the common symptoms of perimenopause:

* Fatigue
* Low Sex Drive
* Irritability
* Anxiety-Depression
* Mood Swings
* Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
* Insomnia
* Weight Gain
* Craving for Carbohydrates and Sweets
* Cold Hands and Feet
* Some women get increased headaches or migraines.

However, some women may find that they might be having some weird symptoms of perimenopause such as having nightmares, craving for some uncommon food etc. If you have concerns on your perimenopause symptoms, it is best to consult your doctor.

Be Nice to your body; this increases the resources your body can devote to dealing with the problem. Eat well, exercise regularly, take a good multivitamin each day (plus Calcium and Vitamin D), and minimize stress where possible (stress “eats” progesterone; the less progesterone, the more symptoms you’ll have).

One piece of recent research appears to show that melatonin supplementation in perimenopausal women can produce a highly significant improvement in thyroid function and gonadotropin levels, as well as restoring fertility and menstruation and preventing the depression associated with the menopause.

It is also advisable to take an herbal supplement specifically aimed at relieving symptoms. Menozac is a botanical formulation containing a blend of natural herbal extracts. These are plants from Mother Nature that specifically ease your transition. They provide effective menopause relief, from the onset, and through the duration of typical menopause. Here are the main ingredients used in Menozac and why they are effective:

Vitamin E (as d-alpha-tocopherol acetate)

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Can it prevent hot flashes? There were studies done in the late 1940’s that suggest it may help relieve hot flashes and postmenopausal vaginal dryness and it has been popular for that purpose ever since.

Soy (Glycine max) (seed)

Soy contains natural plant estrogens called phytoestrogens. Although phytoestrogens are weaker than human estrogens they behave similarly in the human body. In the body, phytoestrogens help balance a woman’s estrogen level by attaching themselves to the body’s estrogen receptor sites. When attached, phytoestrogens can decrease estrogen levels in perimenopausal women and increase estrogen levels in postmenopausal women.

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) (root)

The primary use of black cohosh extract is for alleviation of menopausal symptoms. It has been widely researched, especially in Europe, for its ability to alleviate the symptoms associated with menopause. While black cohosh is generally considered safe, people with liver disease or a family history of liver disease should consult their physician before taking black cohosh.
